Packing is not only a game of Tetris, it’s also a game of strategy. You can’t just wake up the morning of, pack all your stuff, and be done with it. Packing takes days or even weeks, which means you have to think about what to pack and when.
Brouwer Relocation, Inc. has been the Sioux Falls local moving experts since 1969. Because we offer full-service packing & moving, we know which items should be packed and in what order you should pack them. Follow these tips and you won’t have to worry about digging through boxes because you packed something too early.
Start with Storage
Chances are, there are items you’re storing in your home. Seasonal items, like Christmas decorations, extra bedding, and seasonal clothing that aren’t being used should be packed first. The list includes all the stuff you definitely won’t need before you move.
Non-Essential Items
Next, you should move onto non-essential items. That includes things like:
- Decorations and artwork
- Collectibles and knickknacks
- Books
- DVD's and CD's
- Shoes and accessories
- Specialized kitchenware
- Office supplies
- Games
Before you put anything in the box, ask yourself if you’ll need it before you are able to unpack at your new location. For example, you may decide to keep your video gaming console out, but all your board games can be packed away.
What to Save for Last
Items that you use regularly should get packed last. That means things like dishes, silverware, clothing, bedding, and electronics.
Our Sioux Falls moving company recommends placing these kinds of items in boxes and labeling them ‘First’ because they are also the boxes that you'll likely want to open when you first get to your new home. Things to include in these boxes are:
- Lightbulbs
- Garbage bags
- Extension cords
- Paper towels
- Pen and paper
- Bath towels
- Bedding
- Snacks
- Pet supplies
There are important items that you should save for last, but you should have them with you instead of packing them into boxes. They include things like medication, phone chargers, personal documents, and valuable items.
